Someone has to pick up USF we could be the Vandy of the ACC or Big 12, right?

I can't believe that the Florida market would be ignored. Either the ACC or Big 12 just has to get into Florida if the game is TV eyeballs. The Big 12 already has Texas more than covered. Either they get FSU and/or Miami, or they get USF/UCF, I would think.

Then there is this nugget:

MHver3â€@MHver3

BE has learned SMU SdSU UH BSU are all in talks with as many as 3 other BCS leagues.

Not surprising. Everyone is at least making a phone call to push their school.

The Skyway will be a very busy place if these schools go to the B12/Pac10/ACC before us...

This would all be highly entertaining if USF were already accepted to the Big 10 or SEC.

USF fans would celebrate like we won the National Championship...

I give that analysis a 7/10. Completely missed the fact that we are on the academic rise (jumped 10 spots in USNWR since), have a virtually brand new and state of the art athletics complex, and made the NCAA tourney in mbb last year. But at the core they are correct.

I still maintain there are 4 potential defections from ACC coming, and maybe some from BE, and we will land in a Big East 2.0 version of the ACC.

Expansion Option A and the Florida Angle

If the membership drops to 11 schools, Swofford and the league should invite Connecticut, Louisville, USF and UCF. That gets you to 15 members and accomplishes a lot. We can talk about the football and basketball reasons why UConn and Louisville make sense and we can talk about their television markets and history and most would not need to be sold. But USF and UCF? Yes, USF and UCF.

The two schools combine to deliver 3.3 million TV homes, which would make it the 4th largest market in the country. They offer a combined student enrollment of 105,000. Over the next 20 years they will produce more alumni than anyone else in the country. They generate huge student athletic fees to the tune of almost $30 million per year. Both schools offer tremendous facilities that are better than most current ACC programs. Plus, they offer the pipeline to Florida’s recruiting pool for all sports. Both Tampa and Orlando do not rely on the success of their universities for their economic existence but are major employers and civic leaders of their communities.

The national media will rip the thought of adding USF and UCF, although more ripping would be to UCF because the school is not part of a current BCS league. UCF is the second largest university in the nation and this is not about a short term view, but a long term view. Where will USF and UCF be in 20 years?

They will never pass Wake Forest in its tradition because it was founded in 1834. But as far as the intangibles conferences are seeking these days for potential members, there is no debate. The two Florida schools offer much more.

If you’re thinking why add USF and UCF when Florida State and Miami are already in the league? Great question to ask, but you are assuming Florida State stays(more on that later) and Miami does not deliver any market outside of south Florida and even that can be questioned based on fan support in such a pro heavy town. USF and UCF strengthen the Florida market. It brings in a new set of fans to follow all ACC teams, not just FSU fans. Trust me, a USF or UCF fan is not interested in that Wake Forest-NC State football game. But if it impacted their team, that’s a different story.

Why not just add USF, why add both? The ACC may be thinking this. But why pass up the Orlando market and why pass up a natural rivalry? In fact, the state of Florida should be proactive and make sure if the ACC wants one, you have to take both(which Virginia Tech might want to demand if the Big Ten comes a calling for Virginia). The state of Florida, or any state legislature, has an obligation to make sure its schools maximize their revenue potential since state dollars are involved here.

What about the AAU factor in USF and UCF? What about it? The schools are so young compared to the members of the AAU fraternity it’s a silly complaint. In addition, the ACC and all conferences are an athletic league, not an academic league. USF and UCF leaders don’t care if you don’t invite them to afternoon tea to talk about ancient socialism in 16th century Asia. Most of the school presidents at that tea gathering are serving top shelf liquor in their box at the football stadium to big boosters who don’t care about your AAU membership but care about winning football games.

Could we petition to remain in the BE in basketball and play football in C-DOA? I don't want to lose the basketball progress we are making (its the only thing we have left) and an A-10 remaining BE conference should be exciting!
