USF football fans have been waiting for what seems like forever for Florida State to formally abandon the Atlantic Coast Conference for greener pastures – green

FSU’s exit from the ACC – along, presumably, with Clemson – will be the starting gun for the next round of realignment. When that happens, Bulls fans will need tranquilizers to calm their rapidly beating hearts at the thought of their beloved program joining a “name” conference for the first time since the Big East imploded.

 

But we are nearing a time when things will be a lot clearer. When FSU’s mediation with ACC concludes, presumably with an exit strategy for the Seminoles, the dominoes will start to tumble.

When that day comes, USF will be ready with its bags packed.

Becoming an academic conference. What is an academic conference? If you're an organization of colleges and universities, are you not 'academic'? Is there some other conference that is NOT made of colleges and universities? 

Somehow, that just smells funny when we live in a world where the name of the game, top to bottom, is Football. 

"So, play any varsity sports when you were in high school?"

"Ok, maybe you didn't understand the question. I said ..."

If the ACC should lose UNC, Miami, FSU, Clemson & Louisville, backfilling with G5 schools (since I don't think anyone wants to go from the Big XII to the ACC), the residuals would be NCSU, GaTech, BC, VaTech, Pitt, 'cuse, Duke, Wake, Stanford & Cal. So, if the ACC didn't want to be an academic conference...who would they want to include? Or is it all just window dressing?
