Do we have a billionaire benefactor like SMU? Last time I checked, no. Closest we have is Les Muma and he’s done plenty enough already. BTW, thanks, Les.

Question is what does SMUs contract look like with ACC. Does this billionare donor own the school now? I don't think he directly paid the ACC but did they tell SMU they had to cover the payout?. Interesting but not enough for me to go research it.

I'll try to break this down -

SMU: We would like in to the ACC

ACC: We do not think you bring enough value to warrant expansion

SMU: *Booster thinks for .5 seconds*... We will forgo any T1 media payouts for 9 years

ACC: So, our schools will be able to distribute your T1 revenue to themselves for 9 years? How will you be able to compete and build your facilities to our standards?

SMU: *Booster thinks for .5 seconds*... that won't be an issue, I'll make a few calls and we will raise $30MM/year for the next 9 years and undergo ABC facilities upgrades

ACC: *thinks for 5 seconds*... deal

SMU: *Booster makes a few calls and raises the money for donation to SMU athletics*

tl;dr - the SMU boosters are raising the capital to essentially *replace* the TV revenue that SMU allowed the ACC to keep. Best quote in NCAA athletics history came from that guy - "It's just a couple hundred million, I'm not going to lose sleep over it"

EDIT: SMU still gets a % of the CFP payout (not a full share like other member schools), but does receive a full ACCN share (~$11MM last year for each ACC school). So, SMU should expect a payout of ~$15-20MM from the ACC this year and for the next 9 years. If a member leaves the ACC within those next 9 years, SMU's T1 distribution goes to them instead of the conference, so they will receive a full payout if FSU/Clemson leave over the next few years.

So as we all know, life is better once you get out of the Aac into a power conference.

That would be a total gut punch.  Not sure I can take another one.  I believe that would officially make USF the only school left that got relegated out of the big boy leagues and was still waiting to be picked back up.  Hope it doesn't happen.

Like Bear said, if they get in it will primarily be because of basketball, although they do have a couple of Conf co-championships at the FBS level. My gut punch would come if a school with a younger football program than ours leap frogs us ....... I don't see that happening.

Also Temple.  Only 3 of us remain unless you count the PAC2.

From what I heard, SMU is making more being in the ACC than they would by still being in the AAC. This is even before all their benefits start to kick in years from now. So they are doing fine even without their billionaire donor imo

I think smu athletes and fans feel like they died and gone to heaven after going from the death penalty,  to the Aac(absolute ass conference), and now to a power5 conference in the Acc. Smu made a quick jump from the death penalty as Usf did originally from ground zero. Hopefully we get out of the aac this season with on field results.

Didn’t they get the death penalty in ’87? I wouldn’t call that a quick jump.

They didn't play football for like twenty years and went from ground zero to the acc pretty **** fast. Win and get out. That is the goal. We hired crap coaches three times in a row and they hired winners that fit their program. Hopefully we finally got it right with Golesh and we keep improving.

Love this!! It goes to show, “it takes money to make money”. That’s why all this talk about “should USF waste money on a stadium?”, the money will show up, it always does, that’s how UCF pulled a rabbit out of their hat. If we want to be taken serious, we have to BE serious. Our only goal should be to get out of the AAC and into a better conference and everything we do needs to push to that goal (yes, the OCS is part of that equation). If FSU and co. stays in the ACC, I really hope the B12 adds us. I don’t care about being in with UCF, being in the ACC or B12 is miles better than where we are.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
