EDIT: That said, USF received $8.1MM in conference distributions for 22/23 FY. If those two schools left and USF joined the ACC and had the potential to earn even $50MM in distributions, we'd be over the moon. Not to mention, I think we have the potential to be far more competitive than some of the schools in the B1G/SEC even with a $50MM conference distribution headwind.

Zakly.  Much easier path to the expanded playoffs by staying in the ACC.  They go to a different conference and are going to have to hope to win where as the ACC is a given.

“Sixteen is our today, and 16 is our tomorrow,” he said, referring to the size of the newly expanded conference...“As I said, we’re focused on our 16. I’ve said before at Media Days, I’m not a recruiter,” he said. “Our presidents have been clear that I am not going to entangle us in litigation around expansion. So I pay attention, but I’m not engaged in those conversations.”

At the start of 2024 SEC Media Days, commissioner Greg Sankey reiterated his content with 16 teams with the additions of Texas and Oklahoma.

The SEC doesn’t need to add FSU or Clemson to become a super league. 

It already is one, so for now, Sankey can play coy, sit back and watch how the future unfolds before making his next move. 

Maybe the ACC finds a way to survive? Perhaps the much-ballyhooed Super Conference with the best teams from the Big Ten and SEC is nothing more than a distant dream for media rights holders?

Even as Greg Sankey kept saying "16," at SEC media days, he didn't shut the door on further conference expansion, while ACC fights to keep top teams.

“You can see how we’ve made decisions over the last decade-plus for contiguous states to join," Sankey continued. "I think that’s incredibly wise. It provides remarkable strength. I’m not going to guess about what happens next.”

That’s my job. My guess: North Carolina, if available, would highlight the SEC’s wish list from the ACC’s football-playing membership. Virginia might get a sniff, too.

And what of FSU and Clemson?

There are already SEC schools in those states, but those are two major Southern football brands that cannot be ignored. I wouldn't expect the Big Ten to ignore them.

The Big Ten extends from coast to coast, but the SEC’s chief rival has not yet added a school in the South. If the Tigers and Seminoles escape the ACC, it would be foolish for the SEC to stand by and let the B1G snap up the ACC’s top football programs.
