Questions.

1. I see many comparisons between a depleted ACC and the B12.  At what point does the depleted ACC become a lower level conference.  WE know FSU and Clemson leave.  Is is if UNC and another leave?  Or does it take more for the ACC to be considered truly depleted?

2.  I still see people talking about media markets.   With cable pretty much a thing of the past does the market in which the school is located really matter?  I look at Rutgers or Vandy.  Both in good markets, but with cable subscriptions not a thing does it matter anymore?  Miami is a classic example. They have some national following, but don't carry much in terms of Miami, which is a big market, unless they are winning.  Maybe followers online mean more?

3.  If the ACC loses FSU, Clemson, UNC and Miami (or some other team). Then there are rumors of a few others moving to the B12 (but nothing concrete).  Both the ACC and the B12 call and say we need a decision today.   Who do you pick and why?

1. I don't see any scenario where the ACC drops below the 4th best conference. The key for them is that the public draws the line between them and the group of 5, and not between them and the big 12.

2. I disagree. Cable is diminished, and on the decline .... but still around, and will still be around for years to come. Media markets are still important, but yes, less important than 10 years ago.

3. If both offers are for the same share. (hypothetical 50% in year 1, then increasing 10% each year) ..... I take the Big 12. I think the Big 12 offers more stability, while the ACC may have more upside, it also runs the risk of being the AAC version 2.0. The big 12 is guaranteed P4, the ACC might be #4 in a power 3 world. (I am not knocking the ACC, I would love to go there, but if I had to gamble our future right now, I take the safer bet)

I would assume if the crème de la crème departs, the P4 cachet has a limited lifespan. Once the P-Deux becomes a reality, everyone on yon side of the velvet rope would fall into a larger rendition of G5land. Kind of like ACC becoming the AAC 2.0. Unless the Big XII & ACC become a mid-tier entity, adjacent to the current G5.

I predict there will be a massive realignment within the next 10 years that will render the current system completely obsolete. There will be anti-trust lawsuits out the wazzu.

By 2030, there will be one conference for all the schools above a certain revenue/budget and divisions will be regional again and everyone will live happily ever after. The other G5ish conference will be for the schools that don't meet the criteria, but the door will be left open, should they eventually qualify. And then as soon as everyone is happy, there will be more lawsuits.

If the ACC calls first, you let the B12 go to voicemail. Brands more identifiable to me, closer road trips .... and the one big, glaring one.

I would like to have the B12 take us out to a fancy dinner then ghost them.

That'll work, too ... my mind just doesn't work as devious as yours.

The ACC Network is immensely profitable for ESPN, so they are not going to let the conference disintegrate like the Pac 12.  And while ACCN is available in the Bay Area, losing FSU would diminish viewership considerably.  Adding viewers in the 11th largest cable market will protect those profits.  Heck, USF and FSU likely have similar viewership in the Bay Area.

Agreed.  I think it was last year around this time that we had a Whiner Thread about firing MK because we weren't ever being mentioned in conference realignment. That has definitely changed ...

I look at as a four-tier system.

  1. B1G SEC
  2. ACC B12
  3. ACC MWC/P2 SBC
  4. C-USA MAC

Yeah, that's pretty much in line with how I see it as well, in terms of quality. I'm just gonna assume that slot #3 should be "AAC MWC/P2 SBC". I further assume that Item #1 will eventually have the upper crust snootie-patootie playoff, and items #2 thru #4 will be left to wallow in the mire of their own playoff. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. There is a lot of quality football in G5land, as is, and a playoff with just those teams would get eyeballs on the tee-vee. Although we (and you know who we are) wouldn't be seen as competing at the upper echelon of college football, I think there would be sufficient interest in filling out brackets and following along. I don't see the Great Divide as problematic.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
