I'm confused.  A realignment bomb is going to go off in July, but no one is going to join ACC until 2036?  My brain is melting.

Officially welcoming SMU, Cal and Stanford. With Notre Dame that gives them 18 for 2024-25

This may be temporary.  Money is now driving the bus.  When TV renegotiation comes up in 2030s and there is a possible further realignment into power conferences, is the B10 going to pick Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers, Purdue etc over Clemson and FSU?  The SEC, who will be their main competitor and has their own dead weight to jettison,  does not care about AAU. The PAC12 died in part because of their snobbery and failure to add some B12 teams when they had the opportunity.

Actually the PAC died because of a stupid commissioner and stupid presidents that turned down ESPN deal, thinking they could get 50 million per team. That allowed the B12 to jump them on the deal and kill them.

The BigTen has an academic component that works among its schools to share grants, professors etc that brings them more money than a tv contract. Check out Big Ten Academic Alliance.

The big problem is that many of us fans, think of these conferences as just football or sports alliances. The BigTen has always been different.

The Alliance also allows students to take classes via other campuses as well I believe. I.e. a Rutgers student can take very select/specific online courses through UW-M and earn credits for it. I could be partially wrong about it, but the academic side of the B1G is very real and the presidents of those schools take it seriously. I don't think that discounts FSU as much as some would think, as they are a very good school and significantly investing in their research capabilities (+ med school).

There is nothing in the B1G or SEC bylaws about EXPELLING a member.  So Northwestern will be in the Big Ten until they decided to leave on their own.   To do what you're suggesting, Michigan and Ohio State would have to leave the B1G and form a new conference.  Not impossible, but that is the only way it happens.

So, if one were to really believe that AAU accreditation is mandatory for B1G, here's you ACC options:

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
University of Virginia
Duke University
Georgia Institute of Technology
University of Miami
...so, no Clemson, no FSU.

I really think (entirely subjective on my part) both Clemson & FSU would be better (entertainment weight) fits in the SEC, which secures their places in the P2 environment. On the other hand, as pointed out above, perhaps the AAU membership carried a tad more weight in the pre-PAY-TO-PLAY environment. Maybe the B1G can spin the importance of flexibility, inclusivity, and for-the-good-of-the-corporation in the 'modern era' of college football to be less rigid when the office opens up for business.

The B10 doesn't need to compromise over it's requirements.
