The last two years have been a rollercoaster ride for the University of Utah regarding its future with NCAA sporting conferences. The first domino of uncertainty fell in...

In 2012, the Big 12 conference incorporated a “99-year blood oath contract” for each member. In short, this contract was made to keep teams bound together as part of the conference for the long run. This deal doesn’t necessarily lock teams in permanently, but it does make it extremely difficult to leave.

For example, Texas and Oklahoma announced their plans to leave the Big 12 for the SEC in 2021. After three years of court cases, contract negotiations, buyouts and trials, these schools have finally been cleared to join a new conference. It didn’t come free, however, as it cost an estimated $100 million for each university to buy out of the dreaded 99-year blood oath.

The University of Utah avoided this contract when signing with its new conference. The genius negotiations by U President Taylor Randall and staff negated an exit fee requirement if and when the Utes are ready to move on from the Big 12. This is a luxury that only Utah has in the newly formed conference, allowing them to easily leave for the Big Ten, SEC, ACC or elsewhere in the future. Utah has a comfortable new home in the Big 12, but can likely play themselves into a superior conference over time.

For years, it seemed like USF’s leadership shrugged off mediocrity. The football team was the most visible sign of that when a slow deterioration in the program

As much as any player or coach, he’ll deserve a statue outside the new stadium.

By then, there’s a decent chance USF will be invited to a power conference with more revenue. Maybe it would have happened by now if leadership had been different, but better late than never.

Some of my colleagues on the college side of FanSided have had some fun lately by nominating schools that should be kicked out of their respective conferences.

Most likely to leave: USF. Well, you didn’t think I’d choose Memphis first, did you? Since it was snubbed by the Big 12 in the last round of realignment, USF has upped its game tremendously in the most visible sports of football and men’s basketball. USF checks all the boxes for the next round of realignment. Plus, if the Big 12 is smart, it would grab USF as a natural geographic partner with UCF to make travel easier on all sports not named football.

Joe Henderson, now there's a long time TB area media guy. Good to see on the Bulls bandwagon ...

How much of a factor is "smart", when the name of the game is "struggle for relevance"? How much do we put on the whiteboard about the future, however those years are divided, before the inevitable P2 departure? Is there much difference between the BIG XII and the ACC sans FSU & Clemson (alone, not even factoring in other schools). I don't think USF would decline a BIG XII invite holding out hope for an ACC invite.  USF is in the call answering business.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
