had to be teachers I think.

Yep, you collect a stipend for the coaching position but have to teach (e.g., driver's ed, P.E., etc.). Not to say that all Peninsular football coaches are TINO (Teachers in Name Only), there are some very good teachers who happen to coach ball as well.  But, if given the option, I'd wager that the majority would sign up to be coaches first and foremost.  Another state that is notorious for TINOs is Texas. The wife was presenting a seminar, some time back, in the Lone Star State and had a handful of male teachers, sitting in the back, diligently doing something in notebooks. This was not related to the subject matter. Upon expressing her concern to the host, the host explained that there was no need to worry. They are coaches. They're here because they have to physically be in the room and get credit for the seminar. They're working on football "stuff" and won't be disruptive - and ultimately only marginally participatory. Just let it go, pretend you can't see them and they'll pretend they can't see you. 🤨

But when you're a kid, you don't know how the machine works. Wrestling @ Sun Valley High School, Monroe, NC: worst coach ever. But he was the only coach we had. Very little wrestling in practice, basically running laps while carrying bricks, and calisthenics. Seriously. Minimal time on the mat. And it showed! It wasn't until decades later that I figured out two things (a) none of the football coaches wanted to pick up wrestling and (b) this 300-pound English teacher who allegedly "wrestled" in the Navy (not at Annapolis) was doing this for the stipend. But, when you're a kid, you don't know this. You just take the world at face value.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program featuring a special interview with one of the cafeteria ladies at Georgia Tech for her insight on conference realignment.

Big 12 seems really strong. I know you guys all love the ACC but we might be wearing P4 stickers.

Big 12 used to be strong until they basically lost all of their power schools (Texas, Texas A&M, OU, Nebraska, Mizzou) Now their commish is more interested in the basketball side than football.

The difference is that the ACC hasn’t lost their top dogs yet, but we all know that’s coming. And with that we have an opportunity for the ACC.  At that time, it may very well be the P4.

Sadly now is really the P2, but at least we will be M2 rather than G5

Yup, completely agree with you. This all started when the ACC expanded with Miami and VT. Most conferences have always been in flux, but remained regional/common interest. The ACC broke that in 2004 which ironically opened the door for USF. Since then, it’s been the SEC vs B10 with the BE, PAC, B12 and ACC just trying to keep up and stay competitive. I still believe that this will eventually blow up and go back to regional conferences. We still need to be apart of the ACC or B12 when that happens to try and stay in a “power” conference once distribution starts and if it doesn’t, it’s still better than the G5.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
