That would be cool. My favorite pro football league! If only they could get in.

I'm not sure FSU's payroll would be under the salary cap of the CFL. 🤪

They would not be able to hang on a weekly basis just like Penn State and Michigan.

Yep. They play cupcakes all year and have 4 teams that are above average and get ranked top 10. They play top ten teams and get exposed over and over. The irony is Michigan got a slap on the wrist from the ncaa/espn/cfb playoff committee and I hope Bama brings the real punishment on the scoreboard tomorrow.  I wouldn't be surprised if Washington and Oregon run the new b1g next year.

It could set in motion the annihilation of the ACC, or at least a vast diminishing of the conference, because if FSU pulls this off then others will follow. Clemson has been considered “very connected” to FSU, per a well-placed ACC source earlier this year. Miami would be the third football-first ACC school that could bail. And all of that could free up North Carolina and Virginia, which have been considered the two most desirable ACC properties for both the SEC and Big Ten. They would open up new TV markets in new states while keeping the SEC geographically contiguous, and their academic cachet could be valuable (no, really).

Does the SEC want Florida State? Initial indications are no. There is resistance within the league and it stands to reason that ESPN—which is the media hub for both the SEC and ACC—would be opposed to the destruction of a league it has under contract for 13 more years at an advantageous rate. But if it comes down to a choice between losing the Noles to the Big Ten or taking them, the SEC’s stance might change.

Maryland brought the wood to Auburn Who should have beaten Alabama.  The Big 10 is just fine! 😀

https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2023/12/which-acc-teams-would-jump-to-big-xii.html

Lots of Big XII fan boys have descended on ACC twitter accounts, message boards, etc. to tell us all how the ACC will soon die, and ACC member schools will come crawling, hat in hand, begging for an invitation to join the Big XII...

But that begs the question: which ACC schools, if any, would consider the Big XII to be an upgrade from the ACC?

Geographically

There are potentially a few schools which might see travel benefits to joining the Big XII.

Cal and Stanford are closer to the Four Corners schools.

SMU is really close to TCU and not far from Baylor and Houston. Texas Tech is closer than many ACC schools, but by no means "close".

Louisville might enjoy shorter trips to places like Cincinnati and WVU (Morgantown, WV), and even Iowa State is closer than a few ACC schools - but not closer than Pitt, VT, or Wake Forest. The same could be argued for Pitt.

Institutionally

There are some similarities between a few ACC schools and their Big XII "counterparts". For instance,

Cal has some things in common with Arizona State.

SMU is a little like Baylor.

Louisville has some things in common with Cincinnati.

Kansas and North Carolina have been buddies at times, too.

Academically

This is where things really break down, in my opinion. Based on the January, 2023 U.S. News college rankings, the second-lowest-ranked school in the ACC (#77 NC State) would be tied for first in the Big XII (#77 Baylor). The ACC's lowest-ranked school, #182 Louisville, would be tied for 9th if it were in the Big XII.

Of course, both conferences are receiving an academic upgrade next season. The ACC is adding #3 Stanford, #20 Cal, and #72 SMU, while the Big XII is adding #97 Colorado, #105t Arizona, #105t Utah, and #121 Arizona State. That helps the Big XII... but boosts the ACC even more!

Bottom Line

So, which ACC schools, if any, would voluntarily join the Big XII while the ACC still exists? You can make an argument for both SMU and Louisville, but I don't think either is a slam dunk... and that's about it!

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
