💯  - Conference realignment is - first and foremost - about the football bidness. Plain and simple. Touting academic excellence is a fig-leaf, so the process doesn't look so much like the bottom-line business it really is. Who-plays-who on Saturday is what pays the bills. I could trot out that tired old adage about filling the stadium to watch a kid do a chemistry experiment, but I won't. Any university has a lot of moving parts, and at times, those parts seem to be working against one another.  It's an interesting observation as to where schools fall academically within conferences, but I don't think athletic conferences really consider that when it comes to expansion.

Lemme ask you: if another part of the equation was cutting schools that don't perform heavy lifting and contributing to the bottom line, you think their academic prowess (AAU inclusion) would be enough to save them? I'm dropping Best & Brightest University because of their perennial losing record and bringing in Middle o'the Road University because they have a better football program that does generate eyes on screen (which is what advertisers want)? Which is more important - not in the grand philosophical sense of what a university is - but in the bottom-line business?💰

If you can do both (perform well in academics and win football games)...that's the ideal.

Ab-so-lutely. That's the objective.

USF can do both...

We need to win on the field (in football first, and in basketball)... Academically, we are a great program.

Everything about USF right now is P5 potential (facilities, academics, media market, etc...). We just need to win, and we shouldn't have to take a 7-year pay cut to get back into the P5.

Isn't that the precedent now though? Why would conferences take G5 teams that aren't willing to take a pay cut now?

It's sad that dignity is placed so far down on the list of priorities.  It is what it is.

What if the Pac-12 and Mountain West changed the way college conferences operate by borrowing an idea from European soccer leagues?

I was just coming here to post this. I like the idea of pro-rel in college football. I got to the “scheduling” part of the article and the guy lost me. He got way to convoluted with that aspect.

Because they offer more upside and don't have oil money to gouge anyway.

If someone is desperate and trying to hand you large sums of money I guess you take it.

If you are considering football these schools are an anchor. They will be a mid-lower tier team.

Losing programs with 3 conference titles in ~60 years that had a glut of conference money.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
