Good to see USF popping up more on various scenarios. PAC or ACC it is more likely for USF if the dominos fall the right way.

Programs that could be added:

  1. SMU (TV Market rank: No. 6)
  2. Tulane (TV Market rank: No. 50)
  3. Rice (TV Market rank: No. 7)
  4. USF (TV Market rank: No. 13)
  5. Memphis (TV Market rank: No. 52)
  6. Tulsa (TV Market rank: No. 62)
  7. UTSA (TV Market rank: No. 31)

The Pac4 could add teams from both the MWC and AAC to form the best of the G5’s. Of these candidates, Rice does not bring the Houston market, that’s already spoken for and amI am not convinced SMU has the Dallas market locked down, especially with cord cutters. We would absolutely bring Tampa if we are good and playing good teams. The issue I see, if we join the Pac4, the GoR and Buy out would be horrific and any chance at the ACC in the future would be jeopardized for this short term move.

I am assuming this is a SWAG.  I think it would only make sense if other West Coast teams were added for balance. Still, I would assume folks in the burning PAC-12 offices and ramshackle AAC offices should be on the phone making emergency calls to everyone to try to salvage their positions.

I'd be shocked if the PAC-4 merged with either the ACC or the AAC in 2024. They simply don't need to. Seems like they'd be better off picking off four top AAC schools for 2024 (they won't be able to pick off ACC schools, even with that conference's uncertainty), then four top MWC schools in 2025. But this would take vision and dedication, which the remaining PAC schools have shown is in short supply in their offices. So maybe not.

All that said, it may be a blessing in disguise if USF didn't form any part of the PAC's plans. The presumption is that such a new conference would retain its autonomous status and generate at least as much revenue as these AAC/MWC schools get now - that's the only way joining makes any sense (especially given the exit fees). I'm not so sure it will. And if a GOR were required, we would give up any shot at joining a post-FSU reconfigured ACC - a much better fit geographically and competition-wise.

I'm not sure the ACC need for USF is great. Can FSU or UM get out of the GOR? Won't be needed soon either, even if the ACC wants USF.  I'd be inclined to gamble on a move up if the PAC offers.

Well it's not a SWAG.  There are some logical reasons it could be possible:

  • The PAC 4 teams need to be part of something bigger NEXT YEAR.
  • The MWC teams require a $34 million exit fee for 1-year-notice.  So all those yummy "western" teams are not gonna be in a position to afford it... and the PAC 4 won't have money to help.
  • AAC teams have an $18M exit fee (using the UCF/UH/UC terms).

Not saying it will happen -- but it's not completely out of this world.

It should be MORE than the current AAC deal, but it may be a streaming-first option.  It's not a presumption, the Pacific Athletic Conference has autonomous status by rule - the NCAA would have to revoke that.

Not sure a GOR would be required ... but it might also be a short deal (3-5 years) as an experiment with streaming... but you're right, if it's required that should give USF a little pause.

But if it gets to $14 or $15M per year... is that bird in the hand worth the two in the ACC bush that may or may not happen, and may not happen soon ??

Plus, you get that offer in hand, you go to the ACC, and tell them you are about to sign it unless they want to invite. While that might not work, they might be scared of not having a Florida school.
