I think this is an incorrect assumption. Basketball does not beget football.  UNC could be relegated to the New Big East and play football at in the MAC.  Basketball stands by itself. See Memphis.

LOL UNC is a national brand and there will be no "missing the life boat" for them. They can afford to weigh their options.

Did you just compare UNC to Memphis? What's next Boise State to Texas? UNC is one of the mot recognizable brands in collegiate athletics and definitely on the elite of those who are able to be acquired. UNC can be choosy if the B1G moves on the SEC or Big 12 would step up just as quickly to aquire that strong of a brand.

@MHver3: Micro-expansion-update: Big still saying no to FSU but FSU holding into hope that UNC turning down BiG will open door for them.

@MHver3: Would Miami and Clemson be good consolation prizes? I can make the argument that they are.

@MHver3: From a brand standpoint Miami is head and shoulders above FSU...even now

@MHver3: If FSU or UNC bolt then the Big12/ACC alliance quickly becomes the Big12/ACC poachfest.

@theDudeofWV: Quick update. Big Ten very close to a consensus with Michigan on board now. Only issue is how to keep UM & OSU in same pod.

I've read a few places that UNC turned down the B1G.  If that is really true, than UNC is expecting to get into the SEC or they are really stupid.  Or both.  I think I'd rater go to the B1G, more realistic chance at competing and more prestigious and more class (well, excluding Rutgers).

Agree completely.

Even though the state of NC is changing, there are still an awful lot of people who can never forgive "The War of Northern Aggression." Perhaps UNC just couldn't see themselves hoooking up with a bunch of Yankees...

^^ This...

UNC is not going to the Big Yankee Conference.

If anything they are holding out hope that the SEC will shoot them an invite.

no they're not.

the only reason to move is for access or money. UNC has both. they'd rather control the acc as top dog than be an also ran in sec anyday.

The problem with your analysis is that the ACC is not stable.

IMO, there will only be 4 power leagues, and it's still an open question whether the B12 or the ACC is #4. The other gets relegated to also-ran status

Texas and Oklahoma WILL be in any eventual power league. The question is whether they jump to P12/SEC/B1G/Indie or whether they stay in the B12. If they stay, and ACC gets raided again, ACC gets relegated.

If TX and OK jump, then the B12 remainders will get relegated, and the ACC makes it into the Big Four.

It's up to these two, really, whether UNC stays or goes.

quick name all the programs that have left the unstable ACC.

1. Maryland

Texas and OU aren't going anywhere. they flirted with the pac ten and nothing came of it. Texas makes more than any other program out there. they have their own network. the big 12 pays out near $20M + the $10M they get from espn. they would take a pay cut to leave.

there may eventually be 4 power conferences but it won't be anytime soon. texas is happy with 10 (unless they could get big names then they will pass on expansion). ACC is stocked full of basketball powers (UNC if you haven't noticed is a basketball power). even if ACC lost 1 or 2 football programs they would still have at least 12 left. they wouldn't add USF even if they lost FSU and clemson.

realignment was done to renegotiate tv deals. that's over now. big ten started their own network for cable subscriber fees. it was beneficial for them to grab low hanging fruit to add households. that's over now too. revenue is declining from big ten network.

Yeah, that what was said, right before UL, Rutgers and UMD jumped.

Yeah, that what was said, right before UL, Rutgers and UMD jumped.

think about how foolish it is to compare rutgers and UL's moves to that of say UNC or texas.

they went from a conference with a $3M tv payout with limited access to a power 5 conference with a $20M+ payout. it's not even comparable. any team would make the jump from one of the left out conferences to a power conference in a heartbeat.

maryland left because their athletic department is broke. they were desperate for revenue. they were cutting programs. UNC and texas are not broke. far from it.

if UNC or texas was even an option then why would the big ten even bother with maryland?they wouldn't. they took them because they were the only option. they were the low hanging fruit. big ten channel revenue declined last year per team. that revenue source is no longer growing.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
