@theDudeofWV: B1G source: Unofficially FSU is one vote shy of being a unanimous addition to the Big Ten.

Dont know if its been posted elsewhere, but Ralph Wilcox lays out the case for why USF should be achieving AAU status, presumably before FSU.  Relevance is to B1G/FSU/AAU, etc.

http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/columns/column-usf-well-positioned-to-lead-research-drive/2113160

It's relevant to the overall brand of USF. FSU's motive for AAU status is to look good for the Big Ten. We just need to take those steps to become a better university overall, so that schools in the ACC/Big 12 see us as a legitimate academic and collegiate environment, where students consistently get a quality learning experience and graduate on time.

EDIT: I believe we're there in reality, but we need to improve some metrics, like graduation rate

Homer article, to be sure, but a good read. Thanks.

As for the grad rate, it's a false statistic for a school like USF. I've bitched and moaned about it before, but we should be DAMM PROUD of our part-time students working full-time and taking 10+ years to graduate. It's a testament to their hard work and desire to improve themselves.

If the grad rate is a deal-killer for the AAU, then I say, F the AAU.

Continuing to educate the full-time workers of the community is more important than joining a club of rich folks' babysitters

It took me ten years and a stint in Vietnam before I finished and got my degree. I worked 4o hous a week and went to classes at night. One thing I noticed. Night students were on it. They were there for their education not for Mommy and Daddy. There was also a great difference in professors teaching night classes...much less BS....Students worked hard...questions were pointed..Most of these Students..were at THE TOP OF THE GAME...AAU material.

As a professor, I have to agree with 71

Full-time working, night students are FAR superior to full-time day students.

They bring more experience to the class, they work better in teams, they hit deadlines without whining, they're more focused and they know what they want out of school.

I too am a professor and I can attest that evening students do have more academic professionalism than do day students. But I can also attest that day students appear to have more creativity than evening students. I do enjoy teaching both.

Please keep in mind that Nebraska lost its AAU status and they invited ND, who is NOT an AAU member... it's not an end all, be all.

As somebody else said, The rest of the Big 10 were upset with Nebraska for losing AAU status.  As for Notre Dame, they are one of the better universities in the nation academically.  I don't think anybody could legitimately question the importance or prestige of academics to the university.

That is what was reported and if Nebraska wasn't an AAU member when they were being considered for Big 10 membership they wouldn't have been extended a membership. As one professor at Rutgers said in response to their current basketball fiasco, sports should NOT be separated from academics. The Big 10 seems to be the only conference that requires high standards in both.

Not only that, I can't even find if the Notre Dame invite to the Big 10 was even made or only rumor. There was talk about them joining in hockey in 2010 to help promote college hockey. But the academics of Notre Dame is tops in the nation, AAU membership or not.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
