The only time I'm aware of a conference merger is the SWC and the Big 8 in 94. The Big 8 kept all their members and only took Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Tech from the SWC.

Arkansas jumped to the SEC and TCU, Rice, SMU, and Houston we're all left behind.

I think the question is when is the last time two leagues merged and no one was thrown out

Never did know the logistics of the move back then. Was Arkansas left behind and then had to "settle" for the SEC??

Correct and that’s before the current Power conferences status where those five conferences have been granted rights including financial rewards. It was the reason no one in Big12 was going to disband and join AAC. The so called deadweights are needed because they are the glue that keeps conference alive.

Lets say best 4-6 in each join in PAC and kick out Washington State and Oregon State which of course they can’t because those schools would sue the conference because they have no real cause to kick them out. You now have a league with schools more likely to be raided by SEC and BigTen in future making it even more unstable.

In fact is the fact that Oregon and Washington are the most likely to be taken that makes the PAC more unstable. The Big12 with really no team that is valuable enough to be raided is what makes it more stable.

So, USF and Temple are the glue of our conference!

The fact that you think Temple and USF are the “ deadweights” of the AAC tells me a lot about the seriousness or lack of in your post.

What IF the two created a new conference? People keep saying that one or the other will "die." What's the newest conference in the NCAA? Where did it come from?

Seems like the most likely option, surprised its not more popular. The top brands of the Big 12 and Pac 12 leaving to form a new conference isn't any crazier than Texas/OU to the SEC and USC/UCLA to the Big 10 within a year of each other.

Probably would be under wraps until its announced because if it leaked it would be a **** show. But why would Oregon, Washington, Utah, etc leave to the Big 12 to get away from Oregon State/Washington State just to join a conference with Kansas State?

Top 8 brands of each conference splitting off to merge with each other to form a 16 team conference, with the fat trimmed off. **** it then the left over teams of each merge and grab the top G5 schools to have a true best of the rest conference after the P4.

Did it get the ball rolling for the merger? Curious as to what the conference climate was back then in comparison to today ...

Oregon State/Washington State don't have one of these ...

The reason neither would risk forming a new conference is that if you do that, this new conference would not be listed as a Power conference under the current CFP agreement. That would affect payouts and basketball tournament units which would start as zero. This is why forming a new conference in my book is a non starter.

The current CFP agreement ends after the 2025 season. Based on the timing of things they could easily have this new merger conference start in 2026 or just have 1 year in the current CFP agreement

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
