It only makes sense because we are a have not but there is nothing about Alabama and Troy swapping places that is ever going to make sense to Alabama, the SEC, tv networks or just about anyone in America.

Alabama would never be relegated... Vanderbilt? Yeah, they could be.  Vanderbilt for Clemson...

I fully support it. Have each P5 conference tied to a G5 Conference. Top three move up bottom three move down.

The only problem I see is financials. A P5 school would be going from making a ton of money, to significantly less in the G5 league. No school would ever agree to that.

Edit: I am a firm believer of capping everything. Cap for coaches salary, evenly shared profits across all schools, cap for NIL deals for students. Spread television and streaming rights across multiple platforms at a flat rate as well. None of these ideas will even be thought of by the higher-ups though.

It would likely be more like this ... four levels instead of 2.

Big Ten -> Big 12 -> MWC -> C-USA  and SEC -> ACC -> AAC -> Sun Belt

It presumes a whole new paradigm where revenue is tied to merit, not luck or tradition. Admittedly, it would likely require a top-down legislative fix to implement. Regardless certain schools like Alabama (unless they fall off the face of the earth) would almost never be subject to relegation, but it would give all 130+ D1 schools a meaningful opportunity to compete in college football and increase interest in the product.

Again, as noted - unlikely to happen. But I would favor it.

Mike Shula would like to have a word with you. The nfl has teams in cities they see the most value for the brand, same with the NHL, NBA and MLB. A tv contract is tied to the eyes they expect to get from a known entity and not some silly concept of equity. That someone you don’t want can end up in your conference and in your tv lineup while someone you do want can be gone cheapens the brand and does not strengthen it. When formulating the value of a contract you would have to over assume that worst possible scenarios will be happening when right now you know exactly what you are buying and how to value it.

But merit has nothing to do with value, a lot of people think Betamax had more merit than VHS but that’s got nothing to do with how things went. Bringing in unwanted markets with unwanted fanbases only stands to lower the value at the top, the idea is absurd and John Lennon actually removed it from the lyrics of Imagine because he thought it made the concept too unrealistic.

Yet, European soccer seems to do it with great success. I don’t understand the ins and outs of European soccer or relegation, and I won’t pretend I do, but in concept I care much more about competitive football than TV value.

I’ll give you a hint they start out that way, no one is 100 something years into picking the winners and losers having invested tremendous dollars and resources into that division and then is like you know what would be fun? Let’s blow it all up for no reason and see what happens if we leave these small fortunes up to chance and freaky Friday with the have nots because we really enjoyed reading the Prince and the Popper to our kids last night. It is a great idea and if things went differently back when baseball started out here then sure it could be done but as it stands now it’s an absurd idea that ignores any of the current realities and requires everyone with the most power and money to go against their own best interest for no chance at upside and only a chance at reducing their value and station.

I guess you feel strongly about this. I mean, you used a Michael Jordan gif. That’s something!

Unless those conferences are paying me directly, I’d still prefer the relegation system.

If we want to discuss hypothetical things that we would like better, sure that would be right behind actually getting into a real conference for me but I think that’s just because it has only upside for me. However if we are discussing it as a tenable idea we have to ignore that it was a way to create leagues and draw in teams when there wasn’t TVs and the winners and losers hadn’t already been clearly decided and entrenched.

If FSU to the SEC is happening USF to the ACC would be logical.

Yes! Make it happen! Good thing MK has his ACC connections.

    With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
