Students show up to mid major football games every year. Why did SDSU, Colorado State, UAB all build news stadiums? Why is there still the MAC, Sun Belt, WAC, etc. still around, come on man, the P5 schools are not the only teams people watch.

People really overestimate how big of football fans students are. 

My freshman year was Willie's first year. I remember a lecture hall where the professor was asking students why USF was struggling so bad that season. A student said because we just moved to a tougher conference (was our first year in the American) and all the other students started agreeing that was a good point.

As long as we're winning games the students will be tailgating and soaking in the experience, i'd bet 70% won't care if its against Memphis or WVU
