Geography was probably the key. Although the East part of the BE wasn't hard and true, WSU was still a good way west of the most western BE cities, which I think are Chicago and Indianapolis ...

They used to have a pretty good baseball program too.  I remember i used to see them in the college world series regularly.

Yeah, I barely follow college baseball these days so I wasn't sure if they were still at that level or not.
