Here's the thing, say the Big 12 doesn't expand and then UT and Oklahoma (and maybe OSU) leave: 

They're TV contract goes to crap.

The American would be considered a better conference athletically and market wise (Tampa, Orlando, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Cincinnati, Hartford, Memphis, and DC) and would likely get some bump in TV revenue and could possible grab WV and TCU

The Big 12 would be locked out of Florida and be relegated to C-USA/Sun Belt level.

The university presidents don't even know who will be invited until they meet and vote on it. Any media claiming to know something is wrong.
