Houston was 15th going into their bowl game against the 3rd place team from the ACC.  They won that bowl game and moved up 6 spots in the final poll.  No way we're they even close to sniffing a playoff spot from the 15th position.  

Now IF Houston could somehow run the table this season starting from the 13th-15th position which they are currently "ranked". They have a shot at it if the teams in front fall.  They would also need us to beat FSU I believe. 

As for USF, if we do all that good stuff you mentioned this season, and do the same type of stuff the following season, we could sniff the playoffs.  The problem with that though is we don't play anybody good in 2017.  Wins over UMass, NIU, Illionois, Stoney Brook won't move the needle at all.

If we go undefeated and beat a one loss FSU and a one loss Houston, we might make it to the playoffs, especially if there are other no undefeated teams.  That said, if this team starts thinking they are going to cruise through the schedule other than FSU and another game or two, then we are in serious trouble.

We have a great opportunity the way this season is set up for us, and these chances are so rare that I hope every player on the team can dedicate themselves to hard work and maximum effort at all times.  Unfortunately, the world is littered with wishes of "If I could only have that chance again."  

Seize it, cherish it, and leave with nothing but the memories of victory well earned.

And Houston was 13 in week 11 when they lost to Connecticut, dropped to 21, and made it all the way back up to 8 again. If they beat UConn and stay undefeated, they're probably 5-7 at the end of the regular season just from attrition and being in the right place at the right time. The point being, if we finish undefeated with a much tougher schedule than they had last year, why wouldn't we be sitting right around 4?

I just don't see a world where any G5 team makes it to the playoffs with a single undefeated season. There will always be a 1 lose SEC/PAC/BIG team that will have "a much tougher schedule" that would take the spot. The second undefeated year MIGHT be the lucky one depending on how everyone else's records work out.

(Not that I think we're going undefeated anyway... but it would be cool.)

Next years OOC schedule is definitely a downer. If USF could somehow change out the Stoney Brook game with someone relatively decent, it wouldn't look or sound nearly as weak.

If we get passed over by the Big 12 AND have that tire fire of an OOC schedule (both 2017 and 2018)... we may never sell another season ticket again.
