To not take the opportunity to get into the emerging markets of Tampa and Orlando with the rapidly expanding alumni bases of USF and UCF would be really shortsighted, especially if this is "the last pick" for years to come. It is a TV gold mine, untapped.

Don't forget that the big 12 has already been shortsighted when they missed out on grabbing Louisville. Also lost Texas A&M, Nebraska, and Colorado by not being proactive. I don't expect the big 12 to make smart moves now

^ Good point.  Still mystified why they took WVU over UofL.

EDIT: Maybe they're averse to taking schools in urban areas?  Austin may be the most urban school they have.

Tampa is less urban than Houston, so we're obviously in.

But Louisville is similar in size to Tampa, so... maybe not

Tampa metro is over twice the size of Louisville metro.

You may be right metro-wise, but my wife's from Louisville and the two cities are similar in size.

In any case, my original point still stands - the Big XII overlooked Louisville in favor of a land grant school further away from its footprint, with which it is more similar culturally.  That will have to change somewhat if it goes with Cincy, UH - and even more significantly if it goes with urban schools in Florida.

Louisville did the Jacksonville thing and went and incorporated all of Jefferson County. The downtowns are similar in size though.

If the decision is dollar driven and this is the last boat leaving the island, I'm taking as many potential TV eyeballs as I can.

I agree.  We'll see what happens.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
