JR! JR!

any reason why he did not get an invite to the combine?

I don't know why Reed wasn't invited, but according to Gil Brandt on NFL.com:

In 2003, 47 defensive backs were invited to the combine, 40 were drafted, and 10 drafted were not invited.

Man, just imagine if my Eagles get Dawkins AND him back there.  I bet Reed would learn alot from Dawkins and eventually be able to play at that level himself.

his 40 time is dissapointing, but did Jones and Whittaker run? Its not like they are top prospects and can afford to not do everything they can to help their draft status.

I agree with you Mike, the reason I'm suprised is that he was clocked so fast here.

Football Speed IS most important.

The USF Pro Day numbers are in this article by Brett:

Seniors Put Athleticism To The Test

BRETT MCMURPHY Published: Mar 25, 2004

TAMPA - South Florida strength coach Ronnie McKeefrey remembers five years ago when USF had to beg NFL scouts to swing by the campus to look at the Bulls' seniors.

That's certainly not the case anymore.

Last week, scouts representing 20 NFL teams attended USF's Pro Timing Day. Representatives from the other 12 NFL teams had already visited, McKeefrey said.

USF's 10 seniors - plus former Bulls Greg Walls, Ken Dawson and Anthony Williams - were tested in several speed, strength and agility drills.

Here are the 40-yard dash times, vertical jump and broad jump distances, and number of 225-pound bench press reps from each USF senior:

RB Vince Brewer (5.01 seconds, 30 inches, 8 feet 4 inches, 22); RB Quinton Callum (5.01, 30.5, 8-1, 21); LB Courtney Davenport (4.84, 35.5, 9- 2 1/2, 25); RB DeJuan Green (4.47, 36, 9- 7 1/2, 12); CB Ron Hemingway (4.80, 36, 9- 1/4, 14); WR Elgin Hicks (4.48, 39.5, 9-7, 11); WR Chris Iskra (4.88, 34.5, 9-9, 27); LB Maurice Jones (4.67, 38, 9-10, 28 ); FS J.R. Reed (4.62, 36.5, 9-6, 20); WR Huey Whittaker (4.67, 38.5, 10-8, 22).

USF's leaders by event: 40-yard dash (Green 4.47 seconds, Hicks 4.48, Reed 4.62); vertical jump (Hicks 39.5 inches, Whittaker 38.5, Jones 38 ); broad jump (Whittaker 10 feet 8 inches, Jones 9-10, Iskra 9-9) and 225- pound bench press reps (Jones 28, Iskra 27, Davenport 25).

Jones and Whittaker, who were the only Bulls invited to the NFL Combine, said USF's timing day was similar to the NFL Combine. With one exception. ``At the NFL Combine, you felt like a herd of cattle,'' Jones said.

Jones, Whittaker and Reed, rated the fourth-best safety prospect by Mel Kiper Jr., appear the most likely Bulls to get selected in the NFL Draft, according to the scouts and agents who attended last week's workout.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG: Although Pat Julmiste winning the starting quarterback position has been the biggest news of spring football practice, a number of players have stood out with spring drills one-third completed, Coach Jim Leavitt said.

Leavitt praised the play of USF's two deep at linebackers - Devon Davis and Ronnie McCullough (middle), Stephen Nicholas and Ben Moffitt (strong) and Patrick St. Louis and Josh Balloon (weak).

Leavitt said others having good springs are DT Lee Roy Selmon Jr., DEs Craig Kobel and Tavarious Robinson, CB D'Juan Brown, WR J.B. Garris and K Santiago Gramatica.

Leavitt said FS Javan Camon, who has to replace Reed, has been among the biggest surprises.

The spring game is April 10 at 1 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium. Admission is free. ODDS AND ENDS: The baseball team (17-6, 3-0) leads Conference USA in several categories: team runs, RBIS, triples and walks. Among USF's individual C-USA leaders: SS Myron Leslie (22 walks), P Joey Livingston (eight saves, 14 appearances) and P Kyle Schmidt (eight wild pitches). The Bulls host Southern Miss in a three- game series starting Friday. ... The 20th-ranked softball team (36-7, 4-2) visits Charlotte for three games starting Saturday. ... USF's annual football coaching clinic is Friday and Saturday. Speakers include all USF coaches plus NFL and high school coaches. The clinic is open to high school, junior high or youth coaches. Cost is $45. For information, call (813) 974-7170. ... In NFL Europe, former Bulls WR DeAndrew Rubin was recently traded from Frankfurt to Amsterdam, and WR Hugh Smith was waived by Cologne.

I think that Hicks and Green really helped themselves based on their numbers.

From the Pro Combine Training site:

Hicks and Green Clock Fastest 40's at USF Pro Timing Day

GREEN.JPG  HICKS.JPG

The day finally arrived. Yesterday March 19th it was time for WR Elgin Hicks and RB DeJuan Green of USF to show NFL Scouts what they had to offer. In front of over 40 NFL Scouts, Coaches, and Player Personnel the two athletes who trained at Pro Combine Training in Sarasota, Florida under the direction of world class sports performance coach Mike Gough Hicks and Green clocked the fastest 40's in the field.

Hicks lead off with a weigh in of 191 lbs., a gain of 9 lbs. of muscle over the 6 weeks he trained at PCT. He then exploded for a 39.5" vertical jump, a 10'1" broad jump, 12 reps at 225 lbs. Hicks did not stop there. They then took the testing to the field where hicks ran a 4.43 sec. 40, followed by a 4.09 short shuttle, a 6.47 L-Cone and a 11.01 60 Yard shuttle. He then turned heads with his route running and catching ability, not dropping one pass.

DeJuan Green weighed in at 205 lbs., exploded for a 36.5" vertical, a 9'7" broad jump, hit 14 reps on the bench press at 225 lbs. His 40 was a blistering 4.45 sec., combined with a 6.26 L-Cone which was so fast the NFL Scouts made him re-test with he followed with a 6.38 sec. His short shuttle was run in 4.12 sec. and 60 Yard shuttle was performed in 11.01 sec.

By the end of the Pro Day, NFL Scouts were impressed with Hicks and Green, as teams have requested private workouts.

Once again PCT has shown that we produce the results come Pro Day the scouts are looking for.

JR Reed is mentioned on the Official Patriot's website today:

Pre-Draft Roster Rundown: Safety

25 Mar 04 / by Andy Hart, Patriots Football Weekly

...But while Taylor is expected to be a top 10 pick or better (despite a reportedly sub par Pro Day workout) the next tier of safeties is not as definitive. Guys like Sean Jones from Georgia, Stuart Schweigert from Purdue and Bob Sanders of Iowa as well as a handful of others make up the second group of safeties that could go on the first day of the draft. Other safeties that might go lower in the draft and could fit the bill in terms of building depth are names like Wake Forest's Quinton Williams or South Florida's J.R. Reed.
