If we're 7-6 yes but 10-3 with a conference title is much better than getting the upsets and bombing out in conference.  A loss to Wisconsin doesn't erase your conference title but 3-4 losses in the AAC darn sure tarnishes that win against Wisconsin as a "fluke" and it loses value to anyone on the outside that can help us build our program (recruits, media, potential business partners).  Nobody is saying yeah they may have won their conference but they couldn't even beat Wisconsin but you can bet they say the opposite if you fall on your face in conference.  Beating your peers consistently is what builds a program that can go on to beat your peers and win those upsets at the same time.  Also, a conference title sells in recruiting every single day while a upset win is nice but 4 weeks later after you lose to memphis, navy, and UCF it basically becomes irrelevant.

Not really talking "a" upset win.  We're talking about beating the best on the schedule, all of them.

I'll drift down to reality one day.  It is what it is.  Out this way, most people don't even know about the American.  It's fun, trivial stuff around the water cooler.  But when you beat a real team, they notice.  Beat Wisconsin, Ga Tech and BYU (especially out here) and people will talk about USF Football, much like they did a decade ago or so ago.    Until then, yeah, it's probably good for the locals and the recruiting to win the American.  

I say we quit making it a zero sum argument and beat everybody.

I get what you're saying, but GT might be the sixth or seventh best team on the schedule this year. They are going with a completely different offense this year, and apparently it showed in their Spring Game. Might not be all that different than beating Illinois last year...
