This is very true, but if we look at history and who has been selected vs who has not been selected it would seem that conference championships (at least from this millennium) have has nothing to do with the criteria. Our video for the Big12, which sadly did not lead to inclusion, shows that we are led to believe that the selection process will have more to do with the criteria I’ve laid out than it will have to do with winning which was never mentioned.

Agree.  But exactly what they are looking for we either a) don't know or b) don't fit it.

I think we were as close as anybody they just found c) a way to make more money staying status quo. I am of the belief this is a short sighted decision by the Big12 and that they will not be able to maintain their contracted model in the wake of the other P5’s hyper expansion, but we shall see how it all shakes out in the next five years or so.

How many recruits were at the Georgia Tech game? That kind of exciting comeback certainly helped I'm sure!

This is a multi-tiered situation. Radio talk shows, newspaper articles, website stories are all part of the media. Business wise, it's season tickets/suite purchases, partnerships, and advertisements. City wise, would be tax breaks, public events and out reach programs; typically this is done by the University, but it's a partnership between the university and city. This is an ALL encompassing effort by the Tampa Bay community. If you look at Ann Arbor for instance (sorry I LIVE IN Michigan so it's my most immediate example), you can't go anywhere in the city without seeing UM something, same with East Lansing (MSU). I have seen in a lot of college cities or towns, the school presence is EVERYWHERE!! This is what I think most of us mean by Tampa support.

Thanks for some specifics. A lot of that is already being done here, obviously not to the extent many want, in a completely different environment than your college town examples ......

Agreed-- the Ann Arbor example would best fit a comparison to Gainesville, not Tampa. But the reach of Michigan or UF extends well beyond their own city limits. The difference is there are not a whole lot of competing pro and college teams for that attention in Michigan-- or at least ones that rival the history of a Michigan. Now if you look at a school that is located somewhere in or near Detroit (not familiar with the area) and look at their treatment, you might find some comparisons that show the same situation we are dealing with in Tampa.

And on an unrelated (to the posts above) note- when we talk about the huge impact USF has economically on the community, we need to understand that the sports teams and specifically football are a very minor part of that number. I only mention that because it seems like some people are trying to leverage overall impact and equating that to under representation in one specific area.

More important going forward will be USF presence in electronic media circles as we see the decline & imminent death of newsprint on the horizon (kind of a sad thing for us old timers but realistically-- people want the information faster than printing can deliver). I agree with CCS that we need to have better coverage by home town news. I just am not sure that it is as impactful as it used to be- unless he is referring to their online content.

And there's the problem.  There doesn't seem to be any rules/guidelines for getting into a better conference.  It is whatever the conference deems advantageous/profitable for them.

Which is the way it should be.  How about member schools working together to make the AAC into a better, more profitable conference. Where was USF when the BIG 7 Conference ( Big 8, Big 12) was formed?

B12 knows that they are losing six schools in four years.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
