When in Tampa, we all knew he could provide excellent defense but constantly he had negative media and was viewed as some megalomaniac. People loved to make fun of him before and now it seems like the media mostly praises him. 

 

It happens to a lot of head coaches. Some (Bellichick) are praised for it, others are demonized for it. Coordinators don't generally get the media attention that the head coach does. While here, McMurphy had an axe to grind with Leavitt, along with using his ability to get "inside" info for his own career advancement (which worked well for him). He and Leavitt never got along and he did his best to paint Leavitt in a negative light. I don't recall Greg Auman having any issues with Leavitt. Sure, he could be terse in press conferences and evasive with answers, but, he was also a very sincere guy. I remember after the Cincy loss in 2007 how upset he was and proud of his team for fighting back. He said something to the effect of how sad he would be for the team if he reviews the tape and sees uncalled pass interference on Grothe's pass to Mitchell at the end of the game.

I don't think he was as "next question" as most people think. I do think that he and BMM were at war and in the end, BMM's image of Leavitt won out. Years of BMM telling us how horrible of a person CJL was allowed many to believe the events that he was fired for with blind faith. I am not saying it was complete "fake news", but, the truth probably wasn't as bad as it was portrayed by someone who wanted to take Leavitt down and elevate himself at the same time. 

My favorite CJL moment was "that's good, that's positive, you should stick with that" Classic!

Hope he gets a shot at HC again and I hope he succeeds.
