Former head coach at Marshall (2010-14) and College of Charleston (2002-06) brings 30 years of coaching experience to the Bulls’ staff

TAMPA, APRIL 5, 2017 – University of South Florida head men’s basketball coach Brian Gregory announced Tom Herrion as the final addition to the Bulls' coaching staff.

Herrion rounds out Gregory’s coaching staff that includes Scott Wagers and Chad Dollar.

A head coach at both Marshall (2010-14) and the College of Charleston (2002-06), Herrion has posted four 20-win seasons and earned three postseason berths, including two NIT appearances (2012, 2003). Herrion was most recently a special assistant for Jamie Dixon at TCU, the 2017 NIT Champions. He is also reunited with Coach Gregory following a two-year stint as assistant coach at Georgia Tech (2014-16).

“I’m excited to have a coach of Tom’s caliber and experience join our staff at USF,” said Gregory. “Throughout his coaching career, he has always been associated with championship caliber programs, including this past season at TCU. Tom is a great teacher of the game, motivator, and highly successful recruiter. He also adds a new dimension as someone who has been a successful head coach at the highest level. Tom made a huge and positive impact on the team, program and recruiting in our two years together at Georgia Tech. It is great to have Tom and his family a part of the Bulls’ program.”

Prior to TCU, Herrion assisted Gregory in helping the Yellow Jackets reach the 2016 NIT quarterfinals.

At Marshall, Herrion brought the Thundering Herd to two postseason tournaments, including the NIT in 2012, the program’s first NIT appearance in 24 years.

Herrion initially worked for Dixon at Pittsburgh (2007-10), where he was promoted from an assistant to an associate head coach. The Panthers earned three NCAA tournament appearances, won the 2008 Big East Tournament and reached the Sweet 16 in 2007.

They been very aggressive in recruiting so far. Trying to feel holes obviously but also they are after guys in the 2018 and 2019 classes hard as well. Only a matter of time before we start getting some commitments

No dig here, so why didn't our players wait until a staff was assembled before bolting?  You are right, it appears to be a decent staff so why the big hurry to leave?

I do wonder about it. Was it admin, fan support, bad memories, indian burial grounds?
