A quick look up tells me the average human brain weighs about 3 lbs. Your expectations seem a little high.

Perhaps Allen saw this as a faster track to a head coaching position because IU being his alma mater.

We'll be fine.

Bingo, that's my thoughts. He's more of a family guy than your average coach, too, so being close to family and being close to a HC job at your alma mater, well, good for him.

But I really thought I'd open this and it'd be a joke. I'm concerned for our D now--TA was more than just a good coach, he was a mentor. So sad to see him go.

I wonder if we keep the same defense?

I don't think Allen was the great of an in game coordinator.  He was a good motivator and brought a great system, which we will continue to run, but the biggest improvement in our defense this year was our offense.  I mean we gave up a ton of yards and played inconsistent at times.  Sounds weird right?  We only had the 53rd defense and I think we'll get better because the guys know the system now.  I think we'll be better off in the long run and it appears Allen had one foot out the door from the time he arrived.

I agree.  Part of me thinks Allen thought he might be in line for HC here. When cwt got the extension maybe he felt that was it.  Or, perhaps cwt shopping himself made Allen nervous about his own future.

The defense was an improvement over a ridiculously bad defense.

Hoosiers tap Indiana native Tom Allen as defensive coordinator

Zach Osterman, zach.osterman@indystar.com 4:06 p.m. EST January 16, 2016

Kevin Wilson's new six-year contract is now accompanied by a major change on his staff.

Tom Allen, an Indiana native whom the Hoosiers pulled away from South Florida, has been hired as IU's new defensive coordinator, a move confirmed in a news release Saturday. Allen replaces Brian Knorr, who, according to the release, will not be retained for next season.

"I did not know Tom personally, but was aware of his background and reached out to him when we decided to make a change," IU's coach said in the release. "We made an immediate connection. Tom will bring a ton of energy and strong leadership, and our kids will play hard. This is a positive addition as we continue to take our program to the next level."

Allen's defense allowed just 19.6 points per game in league play in the American Athletic Conference in 2015, as the Bulls won eight games and played in the Miami Beach Bowl.

A 24-year veteran of coaching, Allen has deep ties to Indiana, where he served for two seasons as head coach at Ben Davis. He earned a master's degree from IU in 2002.

"I am very excited to join Coach Wilson and his staff at Indiana University," Allen said in the release. "It is rare to have the opportunity to return home to coach and to be close to family. To do that in the Big Ten is even more special. What Coach Wilson is building and the commitment Mr. (Fred) Glass has made to the program, coaching staff and facilities is impressive. I am very much looking forward to helping this program continue to grow and develop."

This story will be updated.

When the offense was clicking we won.  I don't remember the defense winning any games for us.  We could not stop the run at navy or Florida state.  Western Kentucky carved us up like a turkey.  Maryland was a disaster.  Woodie is a great recruiter and loyal, let's see what he can do.  We should have our best group of players next year so if he can coach up the players and make adjustments at half time and teach them to tackle we should be ok.   On another note, our receivers dropped all kinds of passes last year, we need a much better receiver coach this time.

This is how I see it.  I'd add the second half of the Memphis game to that.  They just moved at will.
