Is USF a "commuter school" - and how does that term affect you?

Commuter school definitely has a negative connotation to many.

Whether or not people use it indenting to be negative does not change the fact that it's negative.  Given USF's policy that all (almost all, I know there are loop holes) incoming freshman have to live on campus eliminates the tag altogether.  The campus atmosphere and students coming to class from on campus or apartments adjoining campus has increased exponentially from even 10-15 years ago.

USF used to be a commuter school.  It's just not anymore.

What are the graduation rates? Compared to non-'commuter' schools?

I do not know and I don't think it matters.

It's a perception of negativity.  Reality doesn't matter.

What is the non-commuter rate at a non-commuter school? Just so I know what your definition is.

Only 10k (13k if you count "branch campuses") of Arizona State's 82k+ students live on campus but no one EVER refers to them as a commuter school.

DataBull:  If you want perception to change you have to change it.  Educate people every chance you get.  Alumni have to do that, and the school has to do that.  It takes time.

One down, ______ to go.

Well, this is the bottom line: That wasn't MY implication. Had no clue this would strike such a nerve. My apologies.

So what was his point of saying that? Sounds like he was implying that USF wants to be known as a commuter school.

"Over the summer, Taggart scoured the state dispensing the benefits of briskness, trying to make "up" and "tempo" as synonymous with USF as green and gold or commuter and school."

…………………………………………………………...

"Jim, I've never questioned USF's academic status, ever. But the fact remains a bunch of students commute there. So what?"

Yes, so what, why did you even bring it up in your article in the first place?

It doesn't bother me personally for a reporter to refer to USF as a commuter school, but Knight sounds like a fool saying he wasn't using it as a pejorative.

I seriously think that most people here are waaaayyyy reading too much into this.  JK was writing, and he was looking for an analogy to fit the sentence to fill out the sentence.  This is what writers do.  "Commuter" and "school" popped into his head so he put it down.  He probably forgot about it seconds after he typed it.  His focus wasn't on the analogy, it was on telling the Taggart story.

^ I think that's pretty much the issue everyone has with him. Why did "commuter" and "school" pop into his head at the same time "green" and "gold" did?

It only pops into the heads of people who haven't put any effort into learning enough about the school to know it's not true. That's why some scrub team, ESPN3 crew, saying it doesn't impact me one way or the other. The guy who gets paid to cover USF, different story.

It makes leaving the school at 5 pm an absolute nightmare from mid-August until April. The traffic is backed up from Fletcher into the Collins parking garage. That's how commuters affect me.

That is not possible, because USF is not a commuter school.
