Is USF a "commuter school" - and how does that term affect you?

So I could not rehash depth charts and needed to kill time tonight... so there was bit of a Twitter conversation going around (don't worry, you didn't miss much - I got called dumb, and I am sure people were rolling their eyes at me and laughing)

In reality, the volume of tweets exceed how much it bothered me... I would say I was more "irked" that we can't seem to shake that term.

Do you care when other people call USF a "commuter school" ?   If not, why not?  If so, how does it affect you?

------------

For me, the reason I was "irked" -- people who call USF a "commuter school" are omitting the "just" from it... as in USF is [just] a commuter school.  So it implies they think my alma mater is less.

[And I know many of you are going, "Jesus Christ! Who cares?" ... well, I care a little. There are a lot of things I care more about... but Saturday can't get here fast enough.]

The term, "commuter school" is used to denigrate a university as if it were less of a. "college" than say, the land grant schools.  So, to answer your question, it irks my as well.

I'd be more annoyed if it was being said in academic circles rather than sports.

I generally agree... although sports - and the media coverage thereof - shapes public opinion that carries over into academics.

Agreed, to some degree. But I'd also like to think truly academic inclined kids (and their advisors in HS) are doing there homework.

It's a slight.  A put down.  An attempt to devalue the school.

It irks me.

Joey Knight's use of it in the article the other day reflected poorly on him.

If someone like JK does it, it absolutely is. He knows better. If I hear it on a broadcast, its just lazy reporting.

The people who are ok with it likely are commuters and therefore simply unable to understand any other perspective. After all, they commuted and survived, so it must be fine.

Fact is at worst it is an insult and at best it is a misunderstanding. Whether we like it or not, it is historically better if you got the full college experience by living on campus. That's the standard we're judged by. Ignore at your own risk, Joey.

Edit: I commuted freshman year. Hated it. Moved on 42nd sophomore year, so I have both perspectives. Living on or at least walking distance to campus on your own > living at home. by a landslide

I'd also add that we're different than most schools in that we're a very large school in a very large urban area. That means more students within commuting distance looking to take advantage of the financial aspect of living at home. Who else is a comparable? I can't think of too many schools where you have that combo. Pitt, maybe?
