USF takes new up-tempo offense for test drive today

By Joey Johnston | Tribune Staff

Published: March 28, 2015

TAMPA — Say goodbye to the plodding, shifting, power-driven philosophy that produced very little, except frustration.

Say hello to what looks like a fast break on turf.

After an offseason of change with the University of South Florida’s football program, the new-look Bulls offense will be unveiled in today’s on-campus spring game at 4 p.m. It features spread-offense principles and is designed to let USF’s playmakers make plays. But mostly, it utilizes a supercharged tempo.

Blink and you might miss something.

“We want to go faster and get in a lot more plays than before,” third-year USF coach Willie Taggart said. “We want to get our guys in some space where they can operate.

“We’re trying to get the ball snapped by 15 seconds each time. It was a challenge for our offensive line until they got used to it. On the first day, you could see them gasping a little bit.”

The Bulls, who were 4-8 last season and ranked 118th nationally in total offense, hope their new approach will be breathtaking for USF fans and exasperating for opposing defenses.

“I think this will be a good weapon for us,” said USF rising sophomore running back Marlon Mack, who rushed for an American Athletic Conference-high 1,041 yards in 2014. “We can catch the defense when they’re off guard.”

The key things to watch are organization and consistency. Last season, it was sometimes a challenge for USF to get the call in from the sideline before the play clock expired.

Now, there are more layers. Taggart has returned as the primary play-caller after delegating that responsibility.
