On our road trip from Tampa to Dallas to Memphis.  Got into Memphis yesterday mid afternoon.  Based on a recommendation from some guy we met at a casino in Shreveport our first stop was Gus's Fried Chicken rather than BBQ.  It was really good friend chicken.  Not a thick crust on it, just mainly spices and a bit of batter.  De-freakin-licious.  A bit of spice to it.  Pieces were not overly large.  We each got a 3 piece and thought we'd have leftovers.  Didn't happen.  Finished it all.

The waitress recommended Central BBQ over Rendevous.  So will try that today.  Not sure which one we'll try tomorrow.  Heard good things about Corky's but still tempted to try Rendevous.  The waitress at Gus's said that Rendevous had great atmosphere.

Decisions, decisions.  Just thought I'd put this up here for anyone making the trip.

Stay away from Corky's and rendezvous...

Central BBQ, and the ribs at Blues City Cafe on Beale are very good.

Go to the zoo today! It's great...go see the Pandas.

After the zoo, visit Overton Square...try a brew at Boscos

But for real, the zoo is really cool.

If you want to try something different, and uniquely Memphis...get the BBQ pizza at Coletta's on S Pky (warning, not the best neighborhood, don't go exploring here)

It was Elvis' favorite.

After the wife helped pay for a chunk of the trip in Tunica we went to The BBQ Shop for a late lunch.  We went to a ribfest in Reno over Labor Day and tried 4 great ribs and pulled pork there.  They were all great.  but have to say The BBQ Shop was better than all of those and may have been the best ribs & pulled pork we've ever had.  The brisket, well, let's just say leave brisket to Texas.  Not sure if we'll get to Central tomorrow. We're staying with friends in Collierville and have to go back into town tomorrow night for a birthday party at BBKings so don't know if we'll make the drive twice.  But we brought an extra rack of ribs back to the house so we'll be set for BBQ tomorrow.

^ if you're in Collierville, try Germantown Commissary...it's maybe 10 mins from there.

Have to say, regardless of anything else, Memphis, NoLa, Houston, and Dallas are FAR better road trip destinations than Syracuse, Pitt, Jersey, and Louisville

Sausage and cheese plate...Jumbo sandwich...it's a very simple, no frills, place.

Park at the church across the street.

Also, I assume youre going to the game tomorrow. Game is at 3, so come early and get lunch. (And walk around Tiger Lane)

If you want more BBQ, Central BBQ is right there by the stadium on Central...if you're through with the BBQ, try Soul Fish Cafe at Cooper-Young...C-Y is maybe 4 mins from the stadium.
