Why does our defense always give up the underneath pass?

I am so tired of our defense playing such a soft zone!  If you want 5 yards against us on 1st down, just throw it.  3rd and 12? It should be open for the first 10 yards.  Our pass defense is terrible.  Not the players, the play calling.  Do ever bump and run?  Or do we just sit back and let them throw the ball in front of us?  Geez I'm tired of giving up 1st downs.  Its like we just sit back and hope the other team makes a mistake in front of us.

I know this happens a lot, but I believe the reason we gave it up against Tulsa is because we had a bunch of freshman getting playing time. It's easier to put them in a position to make a play and build their confidence, than getting more complex and them getting beat and down on themselves. Confidence is key to a young player's long term performance.

Because giving up a five yard pass is better than giving up an 80 yard pass.

First thought that came to my mind as well

Offenses tend to get impatient and force deep throws every now and then when you allow the short stuff all the time. And more often than not we have been in perfect position. Nate godwin shouldve had two picks on deep throws last week

Right up until you give up 17 of them in one drive..... ;)

I know that's tongue in cheek, but that 17 play drive and that 1 play lob could be the difference between giving up 42 points over the course of a game and say 28 points.

Here's why it works sometimes- at least twice against Tulsa a drive ended because a dropped pass or another mistake that got them "off schedule."

Some teams offenses will beat themselves if you let them. Usf has been a prime example of that up until last week for the most part.

If our pass rush could get it together we could see a lot more three-and-outs.

3 men on the line makes it difficult to get to the QB
